FAQ

  • I  AM NOT SURE IF I AM IN MENOPAUSE BUT I AM HAVING SYMPTOMS. I STILL HAVE MY PERIODS. CAN I STILL CONSULT AND ACCESS TREATMENT?

Yes, it is very possible that you may be in stages of perimenopause. Perimenopause often involves fluctuating hormones and irregular periods. We will create a personalized medical plan to manage symptoms during this transition.

  • WHAT TYPE OF TREATMENT OPTIONS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE CLINIC FOR PERIMENOPAUSE/MENOPAUSE?

Every person will have an individualized plan to treat their symptoms and needs. We offer a range of hormonal therapies, non-hormonal therapies and lifestyle modifications that can help improve/treat your symptoms. While we aim on treating bothersome symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, we also focus on other conditions that could be impacting your symptoms and improving your overall wellness, cardiovascular and bone health which is essential for women going through this life transition .

  • DO YOU OFFER "BIOIDENTICAL HORMONE REPLACEMENT THERAPY" (BHRT)?

We prescribe hormones that are "bioidentical"  in that they have the same chemical and molecular structure as the hormones naturally produced by the human body. Our treatments include a variety of Health Canada-approved options, such as pills, patches, and vaginal formulations. However, we do not offer compounded bioidentical hormone therapy, as these customized formulations are not approved by Health Canada for use.

  • DO I NEED ONGOING BLOODWORK TO MONITOR MY TREATMENT PLAN OR START TREATMENT?

Hormone testing is not always required to diagnose menopause but can sometimes offer valuable insights into your symptoms. During your personalized consultation, we’ll determine if testing is appropriate for your care. Additionally, we may perform tests to screen for metabolic conditions, such as high cholesterol or diabetes, to help assess if hormone therapy is a suitable option for you.

  • IS THE CONSULTATION COVERED BY INSURANCE?

If you have a Health Spending Account (HSA) through your insurance, our consultation fees are fully covered. If you don’t have an HSA, these fees qualify as eligible medical expenses and can be deducted from your income tax. Be sure to consult your tax professional for more details.

  • ARE TREATMENTS COVERED BY INSURANCE?

Menopause treatments, including both hormonal and non-hormonal therapies, are most typically covered by your insurance, although specific coverage varies by provider and plan, so we recommend you checking with your insurance company to confirm what’s included. All bloodwork and imaging is generally covered by your provincial health card.

  • DO I NEED A REFERRAL FROM A DOCTOR OR NURSE PRACTITIONER?

No, there is no referral required. If you have a primary care provider, we are more then happy to send along information if you consent to inform them of your treatment recommendations and progress.

  • CAN I SPEAK TO SOMEONE IF THIS IS THE RIGHT OPTION FOR ME?

Absolutely! You can email us at info@terrawellness.ca, call us at (709) 744-6093 or DM us on Instagram or Facebook.

Marie Powell, Terra Medical Aesthetics + Wellness

Marie is a Nurse Practitioner and the founder of Terra Wellness, bringing extensive expertise in obesity and weight management. She spent six years in the surgical weight management program in Newfoundland and has completed numerous certifications, courses, and conferences with Obesity Canada. Marie works in both primary care and virtual settings, supporting individuals living with obesity and weight concerns. Her approach integrates nutrition guidance, approved medications, and behavioral change strategies, with a focus on helping clients achieve health goals, reduce medications, manage chronic illnesses, and improve overall well-being. She also has specialized experience in pre- and post-operative care for weight-loss surgery patients.

In addition to her work in weight management, Marie has a deep passion for women’s health. Her experience in primary care highlighted the significant gaps in access to perimenopause and menopause care. Recognizing the lack of specialized clinics and support, she is committed to providing non-biased, evidence-based, and comprehensive care for women and those living with reproductive organs during this life stage. Menopause, while a natural life stage, can bring a multitude of symptoms that affect both physical and psychological well-being, significantly impacting quality of life. Marie is a member of The Menopause Society and is currently working toward certification (pending an exam!!) to further support her mission of improving care for women navigating menopause.
